Climate Adaptation and Food Security

According to the Sixth Session of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6)

Declaration, the triple planetary crisis of Climate change has posed multifaceted threats and

intense risks to global food security, through induced disasters like droughts/hunger, floods, locust invasions, diseases, and pests.

The aftermath is food loss, low productivity/harvests, and crop destruction. Interestingly, Africa has borne the brunt, despite the extensive productive land and pristine natural resources for economic stability. Furthermore, being the largest population, young people collectively continue to be on the receiving end of the biting impacts of climate change and food insecurity.

In the spirit of Agenda 2063, YBK seeks to collectively amplify the voices of young people in strengthening socio-economic and sustainable measures to strengthen African youth resilience against pressing climate change and food security issues. YBK seeks to harness the youth bulge as an asset for Africa’s resilience to climate change and food security challenges through three key interventions. First, building agricultural systems resilience by increasing the top-down trickling of resources to support youth in agriculture at the grassroots levels. Second, the involvement of the youth in policies and institutions and strengthening their capacity to negotiate, and contribute to resolutions and decision-making to bridge the gap and enhance sustainability.
